I am a person who is conscious of what type of food I put in my body and provide for my family. This is why I wanted to write a post about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and my views pertaining to the subject. For this post I will be referring to Genetically Modified (GM) Foods interchangeably with the term GMOs.
When I first heard about GMOs a couple of years back, I was not alarmed I was curious. I wanted answers to my personal pressing questions such as:
1. What is GMOs?
2. Are GMOs healthy?
3. Are GMOs safe?
4. What are the effects of GMOs?
5. How do GMOs affect me?
This post is not to answer these types of questions, although there are a few links at the bottom I’ve found to answer those questions for myself and maybe they can help you.
My concern with GM foods is that as a consumer, I have the right to choose what I put into my body. As a mother, I have the right to ensure the food I give to my children is nutritious.
Currently in the United States of America, there are no nationwide mandatory laws for labeling of GMOs. I think there is a problem because without proper knowledge, how can I make an informed decision. The right to choose is a fundamental to any human being.
What makes human beings different than other animals on the earth is our unique ability to access freewill. We are not driven totally on instinct. Rather we can choose to not follow our instinct.
Now, I don’t know about you but I like having choices.
I do not know if would I would like or dislike GM foods because as it stands, at this present time, I do not know which foods are GMOs. I do not know if it is healthy or unhealthy because GMOs are not labeled in order for me to make that determination. All in all, I would like to know, so I can make the choice for myself.
Now I would like to hear from you. What are your views on GMOs? What do you think?
Amanda

P.S.S. Here’s a link about Vermont State’s Mandatory labeling. I personally think it is a great step forward for consumers.
